Retail store relocation IT carries a constraint ordinary moves don't: the old store usually trades until the last possible day, and the new one must trade from the first. The gap between them is measured in hours, and technology either fits inside it or becomes the reason the ribbon-cutting slipped.
Order the new site's links now. Carrier lead times are the relocation's longest pole, and no amount of install-week heroics shortens them. Broadband, EFTPOS connectivity and any managed WAN services go on order the day the lease is signed.
Decide what moves and what retires. A relocation is a free refresh opportunity: freight and install labour are already budgeted, so replacing tired kit costs only the hardware delta. Fleet-age data makes this decision honest; sentiment about "perfectly good terminals" doesn't. Whatever retires flows into wiping and remarketing.
Audit both sites. The new site needs power, data and counter positions confirmed against the layout plan, while the fit-out can still fix gaps. The old site needs its actual equipment list documented, because the record is wrong and the move will prove it.
Pre-stage anything new. New devices image and kit at the staging facility, ready to install regardless of what happens to the moving kit in transit.
Plan the cutover sequence. Which systems come up first at the new site, what the last trading hour at the old site looks like, and where EFTPOS settlement happens on transition day. Write the rollback: if the new site can't trade, what happens?
Book the trades in order. Cabler before IT crew, IT crew after fit-out practical completion, NMI re-verification scheduled for any weighing lanes, because moved scales must be re-certified before first trade.
Old store trades to close; crews strip, serialise and pack that night; kit and crew converge on the new site; install to playbook; test with live transactions; open. Photograph everything at both ends, update the asset register once, correctly, and hand the old site back clean, cabling stripped to make-good requirements.
Every item traces to one principle: move the uncertainty forward. Links ordered early, sites audited early, kit staged early, so move week contains only execution. Store relocations run this way land inside their windows routinely; relocations planned as furniture moves with a technology footnote provide our relocation service with most of its rescue work.
