Hardware lifecycle management for a branch network is bookkeeping with consequences. Every terminal, workstation and switch across your 200 sites is somewhere on a curve from procurement to disposal, and the organisations that know exactly where make cheaper decisions at every stage than the organisations that find out during failures.
Procurement and staging. The fleet enters through a controlled gate: devices received, serialised, imaged to the standard build, asset-tagged and recorded before any site sees them. Estates that skip this gate spend the whole lifecycle reconstructing what they own.
Deployment. Wave-based delivery writes the register's first truth: this serial, this site, this date, this configuration. The evidence pack from each installation is the birth certificate.
Operation. IMAC work and break/fix keep the estate alive, and, done properly, keep the register true: every move recorded, every swap reconciled, every fault logged against the serial. Fault-by-age data starts accumulating here, and it becomes the most valuable dataset the estate owns.
The refresh decision. Somewhere in year three or four, the fault curves bend, support costs climb, and platform deadlines loom. Estates with lifecycle data decide the refresh on evidence; estates without it decide on pain, and pain schedules badly.
Exit. Retired devices leave through tracked custody into wiping, remarketing and recycling, with certificates closing each serial's file. The register ends where it began: complete.
Each stage is manageable alone. The compounding value comes from continuity: one dataset following every serial from dock to disposal. That continuity is what answers the questions that actually cost money. Which model is failing early, and should the warranty claim be a fleet claim? Which sites chew through hardware, and why? What's genuinely deployed (not "recorded as deployed") ahead of the Windows migration? What will next year's refresh really cost?
Networks that split the lifecycle across vendors, one deploys, another supports, a third disposes, cut the dataset at every seam. Each vendor's records are locally accurate and globally useless, and the integration cost lands on the client, forever.
